What is a gastrostomy or enteral tube?
When someone is unable to consume food orally or doesn't consume enough, they may undergo a surgical procedure to insert a tube directly into the stomach (gastrostomy) or small intestine (jejunostomy). This tube remains external to the abdomen, and a specialised "enteral" milk regimen, prescribed by a dietitian, is administered to ensure the individual receives adequate nutrition and hydration.
